This is a chair/furniture project for my Body Conscious Design course. The ballistic nylon, nails, and white birch plywood hinge connections aren’t working too great, so I’m planning on liberating the modules and making some end tables with them. Here’s a description of the project:

Stop, Block, and Fold is a piece of furniture designed around the idea of movement and the need for multiple seating and resting positions. The piece can be adjusted to four different heights and widths. This engages the vertical, horizontal, and sagital planes of movement.

This prototype is made of four modules, each measuring 16”x16”x5”. These dimensions were selected to accomodate my personal height; when the four blocks are arranged side by side, the maximum dimension is 64”.

The fabric hinge mechanism was designed with the ancient Chinese toy, popularly known as the Jacob’s Ladder in mind. The hinge allows for the blocks to move 360 degrees. However, the placement of one block has a direct effect on the range of motion for the others. Further prototypes could benefit by directly referencing the Jacob’s Ladder mechanism, allowing all of the pieces to move in a more independent manner.

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening, that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique.”
