On Design
– – –
The Intangibles
-Semantic: find meaning in what you’re designing
-Syntactic: practice consistency of details
-Pragmatic: result communicates clearly
– – –
-Discipline: self impose rules
-Appropriateness: find specifics for relevant solution
-Ambiguity: leave room for plurality of meaning, which can create depth
– – –
Levels of Responsibility
1: to ourselves
2: to the client
3: to the public
– – –
Design should be: forceful, elegant, timeless

This Canon is a good introduction to the basics of design, especially in terms of print design and publication. Check it out if you need a refresher on grids, typefaces, and a little theory.
